Impact of Temperament and Human Acclimation on Measures of Performance and Reproduction in Beef Cows and Heifers

چکیده
Introduction In beef cattle production systems, the word temperament is used to describe the fear-related responses of cattle to human interaction. Cattle may display poor temperament for a variety of reasons, some of which may include; 1) genetic disposition, 2) previous handling experiences, or 3) fear of a new or novel occurrence or interaction. For reasons related to animal well-being and human safety, improvements in cattle temperament have been sought through improved handling and management protocols and selective breeding. More recently, cattle producers have begun to recognize an association between cattle temperament and growth, carcass quality, and reproductive performance. This article will review two recent studies conducted at the Range Cattle REC focused on the effects of acclimation procedures on productivity of developing heifers and mature cows. Our hypothesis was that human acclimation procedures would improve temperament score, reduce physiological measures of stress, and enhance reproductive performance. Effects of temperament and acclimation to handling on reproductive performance of Bos taurus beef females.
Two experiments evaluated the effects of temperament and acclimation to handling on reproductive performance of Bos taurus beef females. In Exp. 1, 433 multiparous, lactating Angus × Hereford cows were sampled for blood and evaluated for temperament before the breeding season. Cow temperament was assessed by chute score and exit velocity. Chute score was assessed on a 5-point scale according to...
متن کاملDoes Disposition Affect Reproduction in Beef Cattle?
Disposition has been shown to significantly affect feed intake and growth rates of beef cattle. However, little research has evaluated the effects of poor disposition, and methods to improve this trait, on reproductive function of beef females. Thus, two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of disposition and acclimation to human handling on reproductive function of mature cows a...

Temperament in cattle is defined as the fear-related behavioral responses when exposed to human handling. Our group evaluates cattle temperament using 1) chute score on a 1 to 5 scale that increases according to excitable behavior during restraint in a squeeze chute, 2) exit velocity (speed of an animal exiting the squeeze chute), 3) exit score (dividing cattle according to exit velocity into q...
متن کاملRelationships among performance, residual feed intake, and temperament assessed in growing beef heifers and subsequently as 3-year-old, lactating beef cows.
Seventy-four beef heifers were used to evaluate relationships among performance, residual feed intake (RFI), and temperament measured as growing heifers (Phase 1) and subsequently as 3-yr-old lactating beef cows (Phase 2) in the same cohort. In both phases, females were housed in a covered facility and fed similar forage-based diets, and individual feed intakes, BW, BCS, chute scores (CS), exit...
متن کاملCalm temperament improves reproductive performance of beef cows.
Profitability of a beef operation is determined by the proportion of cows attaining pregnancy early in the breeding season and those that are pregnant at the end of breeding season. Many factors, including temperament, contribute to those reproductive parameters. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of temperament on reproductive performance of beef cows. In Experiment 1, Angus a...
